Do Skin Tags Need to Be Removed?

3rd April 2023

While skin tags can be unattractive or easily irritated, especially based on their location, they are rarely a health concern. Still, you may want to have them removed for various reasons, and, luckily, the process is relatively easy and painless through multiple methods.

What Are Skin Tags?

Skin tags are often found where you expect more friction, like skin folds, around the neck and under the arms. Many skin tags are painless but, depending on the location, could grow and become irritated by this friction. They are small areas of “extra skin” and comprise all the same elements, such as collagen fibers, fat and nerve cells. These components are attached to a stalk that holds them firmly to the skin, sometimes making them somewhat difficult to remove.

Are Skin Tags Serious?

Also called acrochordons, soft fibromas or fibroepithelial polyps, these skin outgrowths are rarely serious. Most people have them removed for cosmetic reasons or because they are in a location where they are easily irritated. However, many moles that could indicate skin cancer or other severe skin conditions are easily mistaken for skin tags, so you should have a medical provider evaluate any abnormal skin growth.

How Are Skin Tags Removed?

A cosmetic surgeon can remove most skin tags easily in the office with only a local anesthetic so you can go about your day. Depending on the size and location, they may recommend cutting, burning or freezing the skin tag to remove it permanently.

Should You Remove Skin Tags Yourself?

While many DIY skin tag removal methods exist, it’s not recommended. Many do not remove the skin tag altogether, allowing it to grow back. You may also inadvertently damage healthy skin while attempting to remove the skin tag. Your plastic surgeon is much more experienced and can also numb the area, making it more comfortable.

Atlanta Plastic Surgery Specialists is experienced in skin tag removal. They can evaluate skin tags for potentially dangerous features that indicate they are moles and recommend the best removal method. Once removed, you can feel more comfortable with smoother and less irritated skin.
