Gynecomastia is a medical condition that affects many men around the world. This condition is characterized by the enlargement of breast tissue in males, which can be a source of embarrassment and discomfort. Larger breasts are not a typical shape for males and are, therefore, quite noticeable in social situations.

Many men who suffer from gynecomastia feel ashamed and self-conscious about their appearance. They may avoid swimming or going to the gym because they don’t want others to see their chest. Many men also wear more oversized clothing in an effort to hide their large breasts, but this also detracts from their appearance. Gynecomastia can also cause physical discomfort, such as tenderness or soreness in the breast area.

Causes of Gynecomastia

There are many potential causes of gynecomastia. Hormonal imbalances, such as those that occur during puberty or as a result of certain medications, can trigger breast tissue growth in males. Other potential causes include obesity, liver disease and certain genetic conditions.

If you suspect you may have gynecomastia, it is essential to seek a medical diagnosis. Gynecomastia is a physical issue and nothing to cause you shame. Dr. Mark Mitchell Jones at Atlanta Plastic Surgery Specialists, P.C. is a trusted and proven leader in surgical treatment for gynecomastia, and he has helped numerous men gain a new shape for their bodies and a better perception of themselves.

He can perform a physical exam and order tests to help determine the underlying cause of your breast tissue growth. Depending on the cause, he may recommend treatment options such as medication or surgery.

Even if your gynecomastia is not causing physical discomfort, it can still significantly impact your mental health and self-esteem. If you are struggling with feelings of shame or embarrassment, Dr. Jones can help.

Gynecomastia Treatment

Treating gynecomastia depends on the underlying cause and severity of the condition. In some cases, gynecomastia will resolve on its own without any treatment. Sometimes, treating the underlying medical condition will resolve most or all symptoms.

Breast surgery is now a standard treatment to resolve gynecomastia. Dr. Jones can perform male breast surgery to help men with gynecomastia regain their proportions, confidence and self-esteem. The surgery can be done while the patient is under either local or general anesthesia and generally takes about two hours.

Dr. Jones removes extra fat and glandular tissue from each breast, along with any excess skin. This creates a flatter, more evenly proportioned chest and shape. After surgery, patients must wear a pressure garment for 3-6 weeks to help with healing. There is little downtime unless the patient has a strenuous job that requires significant physical exertion.

Dr. Jones can explain more about gynecomastia breast surgery and what you can expect in a confidential consultation at our Atlanta office.
