Skin grafting is a surgical procedure where skin from one area of the body is removed and transplanted to another area of the body. Skin grafting promotes healing to the wound site. There are two types of skin graft: split-thickness and full-thickness. A split-thickness graft is the most common type of skin graft and is used for larger areas. This graft removed the top layer of skin and part of the middle layer of skin which allows for quicker healing at the graft site. A full-thickness removes all three layers of skin and is recommended for the face or smaller areas because the outcome is a more natural-looking appearance.

Skin grafts are performed in an area where the skin has been lost. The healing process will benefit the patient by providing improved health and cosmetic related outcome. Skin grafts are used to treat the following:

  • Severe burns
  • Non-healing wounds
  • Large, open wounds that cannot be sutured
  • Skin cancers
  • Severely infected wounds
  • Open fractures in the legs

Without covering the exposed opening, there is a high risk of infection and loss of fluids. Skin grafts help prevent this along with scarring from an open wound. A skin graft can help improve the health of the wound and prevent long-term complications. Skin grafts are usually performed under general anesthesia so the patient feels no pain. Recovery time from skin grafting procedures will vary depending on the procedure but could take several months. During the first 10 days, patients will be required to remain in bed and avoid any strenuous activities over the next few weeks.
