Don’t Forget Skin Care During Winter

Winter is an easy time to skip your usual skincare routine, but it is actually the time you should focus most on your skin. Here are some ways winter affects your skin, and how you can protect it during the cold winter months.

Winter Robs Your Skin of Moisture
Winter weather can wreak havoc on your skin. Winter air is lower in humidity, meaning less moisture is available to your skin. We tend to spend more time indoors, exposing our skin to the dry heat of central heating units. Sitting by a crackling fire is a wonderful way to spend a cold winter night, but it also means more moisture being siphoned out of your skin.

Replenish Lost Moisture with Moisturizer
In order to counteract your skin’s loss of moisture, use a high-quality moisturizer every day. Carry a container of hand cream with you, and reapply each time you wash your hands. Apply an oil-based cream after you shower, when your skin is still damp. This will help lock in the moisture, leaving your skin feeling soft. It will also help avoid itchy winter skin.

Add Moisture to Your Home
Central heating is a wonderful invention, but it leaves your home feeling dry. Adding a humidifier to your home can replenish much-needed moisture in the air, helping combat winter skin. For an added benefit, consider an essential oil diffuser. Diffusers not only add moisture to the air, but the essential oils you choose can add a wonderful fragrance to your environment as well. This can benefit your skin and your mood as well, which can make gloomy winter days feel a bit brighter.

Pay Attention to Clothing Choices
Cold winter days mean heavy layers of clothing, but the wrong type of material can leave your skin irritated and miserable. Wool is great for retaining heat, but it can cause skin irritation, especially if your skin is already dry. Choose more layers of breathable materials, especially the layer that will rest directly on your skin.
